PROBLEM
The complexity of Filipino-American identity, coupled with limited representation in western education and media, often leaves Filipino-Americans struggling to define their sense of self. Without accessible and relatable resources, many Filipino-Americans lack entry points to explore their heritage.
SOLUTION
The cultural significance of Filipino food makes for a powerful gateway for exploring one’s heritage and identity. As a result, I created a cookbook zine featuring 15 Southern Tagalog recipes each paired with historical and regional context to encourage readers to have deeper engagement with Filipino culture and heritage.
The design balances clarity and emotion. The structured grid and clear hierarchy support the more functional aims of the cookbook, while rounded typography, delicate serifs, coptic binding, and collage-inspired imagery evoke a sense of intimacy and nostalgia, showing how cooking can be a personal act of cultural reconnection.
